What Goes Into Installing a Commercial Pet Waste Station?

1. Evaluate the Property and Select a Practical Location
The first step is determining where the station will provide the greatest benefit.
An effective location should be visible, convenient, and accessible to the people responsible for servicing it. During a property assessment, we may consider:
- Common dog-walking routes
- Building entrances and exits
- Pet-relief areas
- Walking paths and common spaces
- Locations where pet waste frequently accumulates
- Proximity to residences, parking areas, and gathering spaces
- Accessibility for recurring maintenance

2. Submit a Location Request Through UDig NY/811
Before excavation begins, Poopy Monster submits a location request through UDig NY/811.
UDig NY processes the request and notifies participating underground utility operators that may have facilities near the proposed work area. Those operators then respond and, when applicable, mark the approximate locations of their underground facilities.
This is an important part of planning any installation that requires digging. It helps reduce the risk of damaging underground infrastructure and allows the installation area to be reviewed before excavation begins.
It is important to describe this process accurately. UDig NY/811 does not issue a blanket declaration that a property is completely free of underground lines. Member utilities generally mark the facilities they own and operate, while private facilities may require separate attention.

3. Unload and Organize the Installation Materials
Once the required planning and utility-marking process is complete, our team unloads and organizes the station components and installation materials at the approved location.
Depending on the selected configuration, the equipment may include:
- A support post
- Cleanup-reminder signage
- A locking dog waste bag dispenser
- A covered or enclosed waste receptacle
- Mounting brackets and hardware
- Compatible dog waste bags
- A receptacle liner
- Concrete and installation materials
Organizing the components before installation helps confirm that the necessary station parts and hardware are present.
4. Prepare the Installation Hole
Our team prepares the installation hole according to the requirements for the selected station and support post.
For the station shown in our video, the support post was placed approximately 14 inches into the ground, as directed by the manufacturer’s installation instructions. Other station models, post types, and site conditions may require different dimensions, so the applicable manufacturer instructions should always guide the installation.
The goal is to create a secure foundation while positioning the station at a practical height for residents and future servicing.
5. Set the Support Post in Concrete
After preparing the hole, we position the support post and secure it with concrete.
Before the concrete begins to set, we check the post to ensure it is straight and plumb. This step matters because the post supports the station’s sign, bag dispenser, receptacle, and associated hardware.
A post that is not properly aligned can affect the station’s appearance, stability, and final assembly.
6. Allow the Concrete to Cure
The concrete needs sufficient time to cure before the remaining station components are installed.
For the installation shown in our video, the post remained undisturbed overnight before we returned to complete the assembly. Allowing the concrete to cure helps create a stable foundation and reduces the risk of the post shifting while the station components are attached.
The appropriate curing time may vary based on the concrete product, weather, site conditions, and manufacturer requirements.
7. Complete the Final Station Assembly
After the concrete has sufficiently cured, we attach the approved station components to the support post.
For a station with a bag dispenser and covered receptacle, final assembly may include:
- Attaching the cleanup-reminder sign
- Installing the locking bag dispenser
- Mounting the covered waste receptacle
- Securing brackets and accessible hardware
- Checking the alignment of the completed station
The station is then inspected to confirm that its components are secure and positioned for convenient resident use.
8. Install a Fresh Liner and Stock the Dog Waste Bags
Installation is not complete until the station is ready to use.
Finally, we install a clean receptacle liner and stock the dispenser with compatible dog waste bags. The completed station is checked to ensure that bags dispense properly and that the receptacle is prepared to receive collected pet waste.
At this point, the station is fully assembled, stocked, and ready for residents and their dogs.
Installation Is Only the Beginning
Even a well-positioned and professionally installed station will not remain effective without consistent service.
Pet waste stations must be checked regularly, refilled before bags run out, and emptied before receptacles become overfilled. Depending on the property and its customized maintenance plan, recurring service may include:
- Replenishing compatible dog waste bags
- Removing filled receptacle liners and collected waste
- Installing clean replacement liners
- Hauling collected waste away from the property
- Checking signs, dispensers, receptacles, posts, and accessible hardware
- Reporting damaged or missing components
- Cleaning visible pet waste within an agreed area surrounding the station
- Monitoring usage and recommending service-frequency adjustments
Some properties may need weekly service, while high-use locations may benefit from multiple visits per week.
