Help Us Do Our Best Work: How to Prepare Your Yard for Dog Poop Removal
Hiring a professional dog poop removal service should make life easier. You shouldn’t have to clean your yard before the poop scooper arrives—that’s our job!
However, there are a few simple things homeowners can do to help their Poopy Monster technician provide a safe, thorough, and efficient cleanup.
At Poopy Monster, our technicians walk throughout customers’ yards across Greater Rochester, NY, looking carefully for dog waste. Along the way, we occasionally encounter things you might not expect: hidden holes, tall grass concealing sharp objects, ground nests, damaged fencing, trip hazards, and even dogs that aren’t happy to see us.
Many of these situations are easy to avoid with a little communication and routine yard maintenance.
Here are some simple ways you can help us do our best work.
1. Keep Your Grass at a Reasonable Height
Tall grass is one of the biggest obstacles to a thorough dog poop cleanup.
As grass gets longer, dog waste becomes increasingly difficult to see. A pile that is obvious on a maintained lawn can virtually disappear beneath several inches of grass.
But visibility isn’t just about finding dog poop.
Tall grass can also conceal potential hazards, including:
- Holes and uneven ground
- Broken branches
- Rocks
- Landscape edging
- Garden stakes
- Pieces of metal
- Broken glass
- Tools and other sharp objects
Our technicians need to be able to see where they’re walking.
Keeping your lawn reasonably maintained helps us locate more dog waste while also reducing the chance of someone stepping into a hole or onto something hidden beneath the grass.
2. Let Us Know About Holes and Trip Hazards
Dogs dig. Wildlife digs. Lawns settle. Landscaping changes.
We’ve encountered plenty of unexpected holes while servicing yards.
A hole that a homeowner knows about may be nearly impossible for a technician to see while walking through the property—particularly when it’s covered by grass or leaves.
If you know about a significant hole or other trip hazard, please let us know.
Other things worth mentioning include uneven ground, loose landscape edging, exposed roots, damaged steps, construction areas, wires, cords, hoses, or anything else that could create a walking hazard.
You don’t need to eliminate every bump in your lawn. We’re working outdoors and expect normal yard conditions.
We’re simply asking: If there’s something unusual that we should know about, please tell us.
3. Please Don’t Release a Protective or Aggressive Dog While We’re Scooping
We love dogs. They’re the reason our business exists.
But not every dog is comfortable with someone entering its yard.
Even a dog that is normally friendly can become protective or territorial when an unfamiliar person enters its space—especially when that person is walking around carrying scooping equipment.
If your dog is protective, territorial, has shown aggression toward unfamiliar people, or you’re simply unsure how your dog will react, please keep your dog safely inside while we service the yard.
Most importantly, please don’t release a dog into the yard while a Poopy Monster technician is actively working unless you know it is safe to do so.
Keeping everyone safe—including your dog—is always more important than completing a cleanup.
4. Tell Us About Bees, Wasps, and Other Active Nests
Here’s one we encountered recently.
While scooping a customer’s yard, we noticed insects repeatedly entering and exiting a small opening in the ground.
It turned out to be an active ground nest just a few feet from where we were working.
Fortunately, we spotted the activity before getting too close and were able to give the area plenty of space.
Ground nests can be surprisingly difficult to see. A small opening surrounded by ordinary grass may be the only indication that anything is there.
We certainly don’t expect homeowners to discover hazards they don’t know about. But if you are already aware of an active bee or wasp nest—or another wildlife issue—please let us know before service.
A quick heads-up can prevent an unpleasant surprise.
5. Keep Gates Accessible
If your backyard requires us to enter through a gate, please make sure we’re able to access it on your scheduled service day.
That might mean leaving the gate unlocked or making sure we have the correct combination or access instructions.
Also, please avoid placing large objects, garbage totes, equipment, or other items directly in front of the gate.
Reliable access helps us stay on schedule and ensures we’re able to service the entire designated area.
And we’ll do our part, too.
Gate security is something we take seriously.
After entering and leaving a customer’s yard, our technicians make sure the gate is properly secured. It’s a small detail that can make a very big difference when dogs are involved.
6. Keep Sharp Objects and Other Hazards Visible
Sometimes the danger isn’t the grass itself—it’s what’s hiding underneath it.
Technicians walking a yard may encounter broken landscape materials, metal objects, damaged fencing, glass, garden tools, stakes, wire, or other sharp items.
If you know something potentially dangerous is in the service area, either remove it before our visit or let us know where it is.
Our technicians should never have to reach blindly into an area where they can’t safely see what is underneath.
If we can’t safely access or inspect an area, we may need to leave that portion of the yard unserviced until the hazard is corrected.
7. Stay Ahead of Heavy Leaf Coverage
Fall in Greater Rochester can cover a lawn surprisingly quickly.
Unfortunately, leaves are very good at hiding dog poop.
Waste can sit underneath layers of leaves where it is virtually impossible to see until those leaves are moved or raked.
Heavy leaf coverage can also conceal holes, branches, landscape materials, and other potential hazards.
You don’t need to rake your entire yard immediately before every Poopy Monster visit. But keeping excessive leaf accumulation under control allows us to see the ground and provide a much more thorough cleanup.
8. Pick Up Excessive Yard Clutter When Possible
Dog toys, children’s toys, hoses, sports equipment, lawn furniture, tools, and other everyday items are normal parts of a backyard.
A few items aren’t a problem.
But when large areas of the lawn are covered or difficult to access, it becomes harder for our technicians to safely and systematically inspect the entire service area.
Keeping excessive clutter off the lawn whenever possible gives us better visibility and access—and reduces the chance of dog waste being hidden underneath something.
9. Let Us Know When Something Changes
Your yard isn’t always going to look the same from one visit to the next.
Maybe you’re having a fence installed. Maybe contractors are working in the backyard. Perhaps you’ve added another dog, changed the gate combination, treated the lawn, installed temporary fencing, or started a landscaping project.
A quick heads-up can be extremely helpful.
If something changes that could affect our ability to safely access or service the property, just let us know.
What Happens If We Find Something Unsafe?
Our technicians aren’t expected to take unnecessary risks to complete a cleanup.
If we encounter a portion of a property that cannot be safely serviced, we may avoid that particular area rather than risk an injury, disturb an active nest, encounter an unsafe dog, damage property, or create another dangerous situation.
When appropriate, we’ll let you know what we encountered so the issue can be addressed before a future service.
That doesn’t mean your yard has to be perfect.
Far from it.
We’re poop scoopers. We expect to work outside, get dirty, navigate normal lawn conditions, and occasionally encounter something unexpected.
We simply won’t put a technician—or your pet—in an unnecessarily dangerous situation to retrieve a pile of dog poop.
You Don’t Need to Clean Before the Poop Scooper Comes
That’s worth repeating.
You don’t need to clean your yard for us.
You hired Poopy Monster so you don’t have to worry about picking up dog poop.
Keeping grass reasonably maintained, controlling heavy leaves, providing safe access, securing dogs when necessary, and letting us know about known hazards simply helps our technicians do what you hired us to do.
The safer and more accessible the yard is, the better opportunity we have to provide a thorough, dependable cleanup every time.
At Poopy Monster, we appreciate the trust our customers place in us when they allow our team onto their property. We’ll continue doing our part by treating your yard, gates, and pets with care.
And if there’s something in the backyard we should know about before we arrive?
A quick heads-up is always appreciated.
